Winter driving can be unpredictable, with icy roads, heavy snowfall, and freezing temperatures turning even the shortest trips into potential challenges. Whether you’re heading up a snowy mountain pass or just making your daily commute, being prepared with the right tools can make all the difference.

From getting unstuck in deep snow to keeping yourself warm during unexpected delays, here are five essential winter car tools that will help you drive confidently and stay safe in the cold months ahead.

1. A Reliable Jump Starter

There’s nothing worse than a dead battery in freezing temperatures. Many car batteries perform just fine for most of the year, but that one brutally cold month can drain them in no time. That’s why a jump starter is an absolute must-have for winter driving.

Instead of relying on jumper cables and hoping for a Good Samaritan to stop by, having a powerful jump starter means you can get your car running anytime, anywhere. After using a weaker jump starter that struggled with larger engines, I upgraded to a more powerful model capable of starting up to 10L diesel engines and any gas engine. It’s been a game-changer—especially for helping out coworkers with their diesel trucks.

2. Recovery Straps and Tow Ropes

Getting stuck in the snow is almost a winter tradition. Whether you’re buried in a snowbank or stuck on an icy incline, a recovery strap or tow rope can be your best friend.

Tow straps are great for straightforward pulls, but they put a lot of strain on your vehicle. That’s why I prefer kinetic recovery ropes, which stretch and absorb shock, making it easier and safer to pull your car out without risking damage.

However, owning a recovery rope isn’t enough—you need to know where your recovery points are before you’re knee-deep in snow trying to find them. Smaller cars often have screw-in loops, while larger vehicles may have built-in tow hooks. Make sure you’re familiar with these points to avoid a frustrating (and cold) rescue situation.

3. A Collapsible Shovel

A good shovel is worth its weight in gold during winter. Whether you’re digging yourself out of deep snow, clearing space after getting buried by a plow, or carving out a path for traction, a collapsible aluminum shovel is a must-have tool.

I prefer models that extend and come with extras like a built-in saw—handy for clearing small fallen trees if you’re off the beaten path. A sturdy shovel can help you regain momentum when you’re stuck, ensuring you’re not stranded waiting for help in the freezing cold.

4. Traction Devices

Traction can mean the difference between getting home safely and getting stuck on the side of the road. There are two key traction tools every winter driver should consider: snow chains and traction boards.

  • Snow Chains: These are perfect for icy roads, steep mountain passes, and deep snow. They provide unbeatable grip by biting into ice and snow, but they need to be put on before you get stuck. If you’re heading into winter conditions, it’s a good idea to throw them on ahead of time.
  • Traction Boards: Unlike snow chains, traction boards are designed for when you’re already stuck. When spinning tires dig you deeper into slick ice or snow, traction boards create a grippy surface to help you escape. They’re a fantastic self-recovery tool that can save you from an expensive tow.

I always keep a set of traction boards in my vehicle during winter months—they’re lightweight, easy to use, and can get you out of a jam in no time.

5. Warm Gear and Clothing

Never underestimate the power of warm clothing in winter emergencies. If you get stuck or need to spend time outside your vehicle, proper gear can prevent frostbite and keep you comfortable while you work on getting unstuck.

At the very least, keep an extra pair of gloves, a warm hat, a heavy-duty jacket, and waterproof boots in your car. Digging out snow, putting on chains, or waiting for help in freezing temperatures can be brutal without proper clothing.

If you’re ever caught in a traffic jam or pile-up during a winter storm, having extra layers can make all the difference in staying warm and safe until help arrives.

Stay Prepared for Winter Driving

Equipping your car with these five essential tools—along with the basics like a first aid kit, air compressor, and snow brush—ensures you’re ready for anything winter throws your way. When it comes to winter driving, being over-prepared is always better than being caught off guard.
